After leaving Eagle we came on to Chicken, having arrived late we got a space in the
Chicken Creek RV Park. The road coming out of Eagle didn't seem as long as it did going in except we added an additional 29 miles going on to Chicken. Anyway it was still light at 10:00 PM when we got in so it didn't seem too late but they had already closed so we found a spot and hooked up. Those last 29 miles were the worst road of all with all the pot holes and ice heaves in the road. We were glad to be done with it for sure.

These weeds were so eye catching I just had to stop and get a closer look. They call them Alaska cottonweed plant, I do not know if they are good for anything except to be fuzzy and be a new plaything for a kitty. Speaking of playthings Punkin Head and I took an early morning walk the next morning. We went over to see the big gold dredge (
Pedro Dredge) next door to our campgrounds. On the way we were looking at another old piece of equipment when Punkin Head took off for something underneath it. By the time he climbed up on the rig up ran a little squirrel. Punkin Head tried to climb up the rig after him but it wasn't working, he sure had a good try at it and excitement for the day anyway. I wouldn't have let him really catch the little critter but he had fun in the chase. There is another RV Park nearby called
Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost ,that has the tour of the gold dredge, that Punkin Head and I went to see and to inquire about rates etc. Seems everyone around has to generate their own electricity. They also haul their water in and the waste out so that helped me to understand why they were charging so much to use their sani-dump.

Later on when we were ready to leave we stopped in to the
beautiful down town of Chicken the one that has been there for a long time.
Susan Wiren is the owner and she was in the Cafe deciding what to cook for lunch. Boy the baked goodies on the counter sure
looked inviting! Her mother sat on the front porch and greeted customers. She lives in Florida and spends the summer in Chicken with her daughter. She said she was missing her swimming pool back home. Nice folks. They had the cutest outhouses
with a sign that says Chicken PooP on it.

After leaving Chicken we saw another Moose out in the brush, I tried to get a good picture but it was mostly hidden by the trees. So that is 3 live Moose and 12 Bear we have seen so far. Also a red fox (that was thinking of having Punkin Head for supper) a few bunnies and some kind of big bird feeding her babies in a big nest up in a tree. The other people who stopped thought it was an eagle but we thought it might be an owl. We will never know now.
We were glad to see the Alaska Hwy finally and to be on better roads again. We made it to Tok Junction and stayed at
Gateway RV Park and Salmon Bake that is next to
Fast Eddy's Restaurant, the Salmon Bake was closed this season. Of course we had to eat at Fast Eddy's for dinner and we went back the next morning for breakfast as the food was really good. Then it was on to Delta Junction for a nice visit I'll tell you about next post.
